The Challenge

The challenge was to develop a Product solution for real-time identification of fire hazards in extremely remote locations, where traditional wireless technologies face significant signal obstructions. The goal was to digitize the process, ensuring reliable and efficient hazard detection despite the harsh and connectivity-limited environment.

The Solution

MLWorkx provided a Solution to create a Smart Military Grade Product equipped with multiple sensors to identify various hazards and build a mesh network of those sensors with the help of wireless communication and battery backup to function individually. The Product has to be compact in size but should be robust and durable to work in remote and harsh conditions while following Military Standards specifically JSS55555 and Mill Std. 461 E and various other standards to keep safety and security both in mind no use of Wi-Fi or Connectivity with the outer ecosystem.

Designing & Development Phase

MLWorkx mobilized its multidisciplinary development team, bringing together its electronics design and mechanical design experts to collaborate seamlessly toward achieving the project goals.

The first step in this process was creating the Product Requirements Document (PRD), which served as a blueprint for the entire development journey. This initial phase involved detailed discussions and close coordination between the teams to define the project’s objectives, technical specifications, and desired outcomes.

The electronics team focused on creating schematics, developing prototype PCBs, and crafting firmware to test and validate component choices. These early iterations allowed the team to fine-tune the hardware design, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility with the desired functionalities. Simultaneously, the mechanical design team worked on conceptualizing the product’s form factor, prioritizing compactness, robustness, and adherence to military-grade durability. The teams worked in parallel to design a product that combined state-of-the-art functionality with the ruggedness required for harsh environments.

Once the prototypes were developed and tested, the focus shifted to creating detailed CAD models of the PCB and mechanical components. These models allowed the teams to evaluate the product’s integration, simulate real-world performance, and refine the design further. With a working prototype in hand, MLWorkx moved into the next critical phase: Design for Manufacturing (DFM).

The DFM process involved optimizing every aspect of the product for scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production. Prototyping & Testing Stage

With the design phase complete, it was now time for MLWorkx to move forward with creating functional prototypes of the device to evaluate its performance and functionality.

To kickstart the process, our Operations (OPS) team was activated to initiate the prototyping fleet. This team was tasked with developing high-quality, reliable prototypes for both the enclosures and the electronics. These prototypes would be subjected to rigorous real-life conditions, followed by extensive lab testing to ensure they met all required standards. Precision and quality were paramount at this stage, as the prototypes needed to be robust enough to withstand stringent testing.

Once the prototypes were crafted, they were meticulously assembled, loaded with the firmware, and prepared for testing. The process was executed with precision and efficiency, ensuring the prototypes were ready for immediate evaluation.
